Gypo

“Hottest ticket at Cannes” — Yahoo

When young Czech refugee Tasha (rising star Chloe Sirene), comes into the life of working-class British housewife Helen (TV star Pauline McLynn) they are instantly drawn to one another—finding connection and unexpected passion. While Helen endures her bigoted husband Paul (legendary British actor Paul McGann) and wild teenage daughter Kelly (bad-ass Tamzin Dunstone) Tasha and her mother (the amazing Rula Lenska) await their British passports and deal with the pervasive immigrant-bashing that surrounds them (“Gypo” is a racist British epithet for Gypsy/Roma-Sinti people and refugees). The film’s entire cast give tremendous performances as the story unfolds from three perspectives, ala Kurosawa’s classic, Rashomon. With a distinctive, atmospheric aesthetic and filmed in Lars von Trier’s Dogme95 style (hand-held camera, location shooting, no special lighting, etc.), Gypo is the first certified lesbian themed Dogme film.

Girl Seeks Girl-Chica, Busca, Chica

“THE L WORD with a Spanish lilt!” —Edge San Francisco

This hot and hilarious lesbian soap opera takes you on a wild ride through the mixed up love lives of a group of sexy Madrid lesbians including the unbelievably gorgeous Spanish TV star Celia Freijeiro who plays Nines, the bartender at the local dyke bar (for L Word fans, think Euro-Shane). She’s got her hands full with her latest conquest, the ultra-clingy Monica. Meanwhile, Nines is pursuing Monica’s roommate (the ravishing but straight Carmen) while also trying to fend off the newly out Ana, who keeps pestering Nines to teach her the ways of lesbian love! “With dialogue that sizzles and a heart bigger than Madrid itself, Girl Seeks Girl has that sublime quality akin to recognizing the joy of a particular moment as you experience it.

Producing Adults

"Sensitively portrays love between women." – The Weekly News

Desperate for a child, Venla rebels against her male lover’s resistance and goes for a back alley do-it-yourself in vitro treatment – where she ends up falling in love with her female doctor! Antero (Kari-Pekka Toivonen), a speed skater, and Venla (Minna Haapkyla), a psychologist, are a modern, long-time unmarried couple in Finland. But their relationship is in crisis: Venla wants them to finally marry and have a family. Antero is fine with marrying, but definitely does not want children, particularly as he believes it will interfere with his success in sports. Fearful of losing Venla, Antero proposes, but secretly, he also gets a vasectomy. Frustrated and angry (and determined to have a child), Venla concocts a plan to have an “after hours” insemination at the fertility clinic where she works. But to her surprise, she begins to develop feelings for Satu (Minttu Mustakallio), the sympathetic female doctor in on the scheme. What happens when one partner wants to have a baby and the other doesn’t?

This ultimately irreconcilable difference marks the incisive starting point for director Aleksi Salmanpera’s accomplished debut feature that the LA Times called, “consistently unpredictable.” Producing Adults (Finland’s official submission for the 2004 Academy Awards) unfolds a tangle of drama and deceptions as the film grapples with the fundamental question: What are the things we do (and refuse to do) for love?

At first unsure of what to do, they decide to take him with them. Gradually Anis establishes himself in the life of the couple and for a brief moment, the three manage to help and support each other in an unusual and emotionally intricate relation.

Yet this precarious balance is short-lived: Anis loses his job and is rejected by Mara with whom he has fallen in love, and Anna finds her idyllic domestic arrangement falling to pieces.
